The red-green steering wheel strikes against Stockholm’s studded tire users.

Tires are now banned on four streets in the city center – and more are being investigated.

– It’s about reducing the climate emissions from petrol and diesel cars, says Trafikborgarrådet Lars Strömgren (MP).

Stockholm municipality bans studded tires on four new streets in the inner city. In addition, five more streets are to be investigated for a ban. This is what the Environmental Party in Stockholm writes in a press release.

The ban comes into force on 1 October 2027 and covers Sveavägen, Birger Jarlsgatan, Torsgatan and Vasagatan between Tegelbacken and Norra Bantorget.

– I want to create a city that is better for both Stockholmers and the planet. It is about reducing climate emissions from petrol and diesel cars, but also about counteracting the pollution that makes people sick and shortens our lives, says Lars Strömgren (MP), City of Stockholm traffic councilor in the press release.

Could be five more streets

The other five streets that will also be investigated are Valhallavägen, Sankt Eriksgatan, Långholmsgatan, Götgatan and Ringvägen. The assessment is that these streets should be covered by the studded tire ban on 1 October 2029.

Since before, it is forbidden to drive with studded tires on Hornsgatan, Kungsgatan and Fleminggatan.
