According to expert Fredrik Löjdquist, the situation right now is the most worrying since Russia invaded Ukraine almost four years ago.
– Russia may be about to be rewarded for its aggression, he says in Agenda.
Just over a week ago, Donald Trump’s 28-point plan for peace between Ukraine and Russia was revealed.
And it has been described as a wish list for President Vladimir Putin.
The list has since, after talks with Ukraine, been revised to a new peace plan with 19 points.
“Could be the end”
Fredrik Löjdquist, head of the Center for Eastern European Studies at the Foreign Policy Institute, describes this situation as the most worrying since Russia began its war of aggression against Ukraine in February 2022.
– What we have seen in the last ten days is that there is a dynamic where Russia may be about to be rewarded for its aggression against Ukraine, he says in SVT’s Agenda.
He continues:
– That you may be rewarded by the United States, in a way that goes against the interests of Ukraine and Europe, could be the end of the idea we have had of a rules-based security order based on the UN statutes and international law.
The expert: No peace agreement
Fredrik Löjdquist believes that such a situation is not immediately imminent, but that the direction is “very clear”.
– Trump seems to want a deal of some kind with Russia at all costs, whatever the cost, he says in Agenda.
He goes on to say that while the revised plan is an improvement over the original, it is still based on the “Russian agenda”.
– What is involved is not whether Ukraine should retain its full sovereignty and independence and freedom, but what is being negotiated is how much Ukraine’s sovereignty and freedom should be curtailed. I find it hard to see that this would be any kind of peace agreement. The Russian goals are unchanged.
