Former prime minister sentenced to death in Bangladesh

Bangladesh’s former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is sentenced to death for crimes against humanity.

A court in Bangladesh finds the country’s former prime minister Sheikh Hasina guilty of crimes against humanity. This with reference to the deadly strikes against last year’s popular protests.

– Everyone. . . elements stipulating crimes against humanity have been met, Judge Golam Mortuza Mozumder said in the courtroom in Dhaka.

Hasina, now 78, was ousted in a popular uprising last year. The bloody protests against her rule continued for weeks, several hundred people were killed and even more injured.

The demonstrations were about the country’s system of quotas for posts in the civil service, which favors groups allied with Hasina. The protests were about corruption and lack of democracy.

When Sheikh Hasina was ousted, she had been in power for 15 years. In February next year, the country will go to the polls.
