In five years, consumption has decreased by 6.5 percent, shows a new report from the Central Association for Alcohol and Narcotics Information (CAN), reports Ekot.

In total, Swedes therefore drink less, but more of what is consumed now comes from the state monopoly. In recent years, purchases from abroad have decreased, while Systembolaget strengthened its position at home.

Fewer people shop abroad

There are several explanations for this, says Björn Trolldal, researcher at CAN and author of the report.

– The pandemic went on for quite some time, and many acquired new habits, for example shopping at Systembolaget.

– But then we also have this that travel imports have decreased, it has become less profitable to buy alcohol in other countries. So there are various reasons, he says.

Wine continues to be the Swedes’ favorite drink, followed by strong beer and spirits. The distribution between drinks has remained stable in recent years – we drink about the same as before, just a little less of everything.
