NEW YORK. — Lindbom stood for a whole lot of effort.
That’s Swedish Vegas star William Karlsson’s assessment of compatriot Carl Lindbom’s NHL debut in Vegas last night.
NIGHT’S DEBUT
Yes, Färjestad’s young hit man from the 23-24 season, Carl Lindbom, made his NHL debut when his Vegas visited Tampa last night – and it went great.
The Lightning did win 2-1 after a close overtime goal by Nikita Kucherov, but the 22-year-old from Stockholm stopped 26 of 28 shots and made a strong impression on his teammates.
– He stood for a whole effort and kept us in the game the whole way. He is a nice guy and apparently also a very good goalie, says William Karlsson, who himself scored the visitors’ only goal at the end of the first period.
Fatally enough, however, the referee (!) Frederick L’Ecuyer managed to score a goal on the Swedish debutant. Lindbom went out behind the box to stop a lapped puck – but before it got that far it hit one of L’Ecuyer’s skates and was directed into the empty box.
Of course, that “goal” was ruled out, but still. It will also be something to remember for the new knight.
Victor Hedman provided an assist for the home team.
NIGHT’S HOPEFUL MESSAGE
After a slow start to the season, it looks like Elias Pettersson has begun to warm up in earnest.
He had two goals and an assist in the Canucks’ loss to Montreal last night – and when they took the scalp of the season last night by beating Edmonton 4-3, he chipped in with another goal and another assist.
Such announcements are not least what the Tre Kronor management wants to see before the Olympics.
The big heroes of the night in Rogers Arena were otherwise Kiefer Sherwood, who scored two goals – including the decisive one in overtime.
Even the hill Marcus Pettersson had an assist.
NIGHT’S VICTORY SUITE
Coffee, cake, eight in a row. The New Jersey Devils just keep winning and winning. On Sunday, they also beat mighty Colorado at home in The Rock. The match was 2-2 at full time and then the magnificent Jack Hughes decided in extra time.
Thus, the red and black keep away from the top of the overall table.
– They really have a lot of “skills” and guys who just fly past you, says Avalanche center Brock Nelson.
Victor Olofsson assisted one of the visitors’ goals and after a couple of weeks on the injury list, Jacob Markström was replaced as goalkeeper reserve in the league leaders’ box.
SECOND SUCCESS OF THE NIGHT
The Utah Mammoth are the real bangers of the opening three regular season weeks.
They took their seventh straight overnight – by beating Winnipeg 3-2 on the road – and now they’re shadowing the Devils at the top of the table.
– It is big. We also played yesterday and the Jets are tough to face. But we gave them next to nothing and capitalized on our own chances,” said 22-year-old Dylan Guenther, who scored the decisive puck with five and a half minutes remaining.
NIGHT’S CUT OFF LOSS WHITE
The Calgary Flames had lost eight straight games before tonight’s round, but against the towering New York Rangers at home in the Saddledome, they were finally able to secure their first victory since the premiere almost three weeks ago.
– It hasn’t been so fun in recent weeks, so this was a big relief. Now the boys can breathe for a while, says coach Ryan Huska.
The New York Rangers players can’t.
– It’s so damn frustrating that we talk about starting our long road trip in a good way and then come out and are this flat, team captain JT Miller growls.
Mikael Backlund played up to two nice Blake Coleman buckets in the third period, including one down the stretch.
LATE SEASON DEBUT OF THE NIGHT
Oskar Bäck has been injured during the start of the season, but in Dallas’ away game against Nashville he was finally able to take a place in the lineup – and it started nicely.
In the middle of the second period, the 25-year-old from Värmland headed in a shot from Radek Faksa.
What did the TV commentators from Texas say then?
– Welcome back, Bäck!
In the end, the Stars won 3-2, after coming back from 0-2 down.
Filip Forsberg was noted for an assist.
FIRST VICTORY OF THE NIGHT
Well, the LA Kings have also won earlier in the season, but last night’s 3-1 triumph against the Blackhawks in Chicago was the first secured in regular time.
– It was really about time. I started to think that all our games would go to overtime, so this felt good, says defender Joel Edmundson.
Adrian Kempe did not score for once, but did contribute an assist.
SWEDES OF THE NIGHT
• William Eklund, San Jose Sharks
– “Lill-Fimpen” glows again. Two goals and an assist were the harvest in the wild match in St Paul last night.
• Elias Pettersson, Vancouver Canucks
– Things have started to move. He contributed a goal and an assist as the Canucks defeated the rival Oilers.
• Carl Lindbom, Vegas Golden Knights
– The young goalkeeping talent definitely made a debut worth remembering, despite the snowy overtime loss.
• Oskar Back, Dallas Stars
– As the TV commentators said: Welcome back, Bäck!
• Mikael Backlund, Calgary Flames
– In the Västmanland of cucumbers, they know how to break sandwiches and that’s exactly what “Mickis” did to his friend Coleman, twice again, when the Flames finally broke their losing streak.
• William Karlsson, Vegas Golden Knights
– The Knights’ offense has cooled dangerously, but Wild Bill continues to score nice goals
