Unusual disease increases – spread from birds
On the west coast, the number of cases of parrot disease has increased during December, GP writes. The disease is a bacterial disease that spreads from birds to humans. The symptoms are described as flu-like and can also be experienced as pneumonia.
– During 2025, we have so far registered 14 cases in the region. In December we noted seven cases and in November three cases, says Thomas Wahlberg, infection control doctor in the Västra Götaland region to the newspaper.
The disease is spread via bacteria in bird feces or respiratory tracts. One should therefore be careful when using, for example, a high-pressure washer when cleaning bird tables, as the particles from the dust can spread into the air.
– The important thing is to avoid direct contact with birds. Be careful when you clean surfaces where birds have been, as you can inhale dust that may contain infectious agents, says Thomas Wahlberg to the newspaper.
