Tomasson’s criticism of the Club World Cup: “Unnecessary”

This summer’s Club World Cup has met with resistance from coaches.

Jon Dahl Tomasson agrees with the criticism.

– It’s unnecessary, says the national team captain.

After the national team break, several players will head to the USA for the Club World Cup, which begins on June 15. The prize money is big when 32 teams compete for the title.

But there are also concerns about how the players will cope.

– It’s absurd to play the World Cup for club teams. The clubs are happy about the money they get, but it ruins the players, says Dutch national coach Ronald Koeman.

“Strange pre-season”

National team captain Jon Dahl Tomasson doesn’t like the tournament either.

– Unnecessary. There are a lot of matches. It’s more fun to win the Champions League. It’s more fun to win the European Championship, it’s more fun to win the league, it’s more fun to play for the national team instead of having these matches during the summer, he says and continues:

– I’m very curious about how the players will cope during the season. Nobody knows. It’s a strange pre-season with a lot of traveling, so for me it’s unnecessary.

Among the players who are in the current Swedish national team squad are Daniel Svensson, John Mellberg and Samuel Dahl who are eligible for the Club World Cup.

– It will be awesome to go to the USA and play it, Dahl said yesterday.
