Three million liters of poop water have leaked onto Gotland

Three million liters of sewage leaked out last spring at a popular swimming spot five kilometers north of Visby.

This is according to a deviation report from the region that Helagotland has received.

It was during the period from March 15 to May 7 that 3,000 cubic meters of untreated sewage leaked into Snäckviken, a popular swimming spot five kilometers north of Visby.

This is evident from a notification of deviation from Region Gotland’s sewage unit that Helagotland has received.

A blockage in the pipes to a pumping station at Snäck caused the leak; the wastewater could not reach the pumping station and instead leaked out.

Region Gotland has previously not provided any details about the incident, citing confidentiality, but the report shows that several million liters of untreated wastewater leaked out.

200 visitors per day

The fact that the large leak of sewage water was not discovered immediately is said to have been due to the pumping station not sounding the alarm as it should have.

When the blockage in the pipeline was discovered, clean-up work was carried out, including using an excavator.

Snäckviken north of Visby is a bathing area with over 200 visitors daily during the high season. On June 10, a water test was carried out which showed that the bathing water, despite the large discharge earlier in the spring, was then suitable.
