This is how Duplantis celebrates in Stockholm Night

How do you celebrate your twelfth world record in pole vaulting?

Well, by dancing to your own song with your worst competitor, for example.

Sportbladet was there when Mondo Duplantis drove off late tonight.

– I’m ready for anything, he says.

Three hours after the historic world record of 6.28 at the Stockholm stadium, Mondo Duplantis showed up at the gala’s after-party – in completely the wrong clothes.

It was announced that the stadium’s VIP stands above the north stand were hosting a “White Party” and most of the guests were wearing white. But then Mondo appeared in all black.

The 25-year-old, who came with several of his pole vault colleagues, quickly got a light beer in his hand and then the big hug party with friends and acquaintances began – and some tender kisses with his girlfriend Desiré Inglander. Those who didn’t get a hug took a selfie with the main character of the evening.

There was a good buzz at the after-party and very soon Duplantis was on the dance floor too. He danced with Emmanouil Karalis, the Greek world number two, to his own song “Bop” before getting off and continuing to mingle.

Bolt promised a party with Duplantis

It remains to be seen whether there will be a party with Usain Bolt for Duplantis as well. The greatest sprinter of all time was in attendance at the Stockholm stadium when Duplantis broke his record.

Before the competition, Bolt promised that he would party with Duplantis if he set a new world record.

– I think he would have been partying anyway, it didn’t matter that I broke the world record. But now I might join in, I think it will be fun, says Duplantis.

Bolt was not present at the after-party. He instead appeared at the Rosendal Garden Party music festival on Djurgården.

With family

Duplantis also wants to spend time with his family.

– I’m going with the flow but I have all my loved ones here, so it doesn’t matter what we do as long as we’re together.

It’s Sunday night and things aren’t going so well in town.

– It is what it is. I don’t need to be at Stureplan right now actually. I think it’s just as nice to be with my loved ones. There are a lot of them here, a lot of them. If I were to party with just them, I’m totally fine with that, says Duplantis.

Want to drink beer with Almgren

Duplantis is also clear that he wants to hang out with Andreas Almgren, who set the European record for 5,000 meters. He crossed the finish line just minutes after Duplantis broke the world record.

– We need to have a drink together, honestly. It was pretty crazy, what he did at the same time I broke the world record, says Duplantis.

Almgren also sounded eager to hang out.

– You can’t say no to that. He (Duplantis) knows how to celebrate, so I just choose to follow his example, says Almgren.

But when Sportbladet left the after-party, Almgren had not shown up. The newly-crowned European record holder at 5,000 meters, on the other hand, is going to a high-altitude camp in the Alps tomorrow.
