Sun throughout Sweden - on the darkest day of the year

On the darkest day of the year, a hitherto rare guest this winter is expected to appear over almost all of Sweden – the sun.

The explanation for the sun peeking out on the same day as the winter solstice, that is, the day when the day is the shortest and the hours of darkness the most before it turns and becomes brighter, is a high pressure ridge that is brought in over Scandinavia.

The cloud cover may have a little extra difficulty in clearing in western Götaland and there it may take until later in the day before the sun’s rays are visible. Even in the mountain regions, clouds may linger and in the northernmost parts there may be villages of snow during the day, writes SMHI’s meteorologist early on Sunday morning.

The high pressure is believed to bring one or a few days of colder weather, , according to SMHI. The weather will continue to be dry and it won’t be a white Christmas where it hasn’t already snowed.
