Madagaskar President disappeared – has left the country
Madagaskar’s President Andry Rajoelina has not been seen in over a week, and his current place of residence is unknown, says the country’s Security Minister Mandimbin’ny Aina Randriambelo to Reuters according to the BBC. Despite this, Rajoelina is expected to give a speech to the nation later on Monday.
The situation in the country is tense since an influential military unit has switched to the protesters demanding the president’s departure. Soldiers have taken control of a military complex, which has caused concern that the situation may develop into a coup.
According to French RFI, Rajoelina must have been taken from the country with a French military plan that flew him on to Mauritius and Dubai.
However, France has denied military involvement. “No French intervention is ongoing or planned. We fully respect Madagascar’s sovereignty,” the French Foreign Ministry writes in a statement.
