Deep snow, sledding and anger at poor plowing – winter has taken a firm grip on the whole country – but will it last?
SMHI now warns of a strong cooling effect in the mountains – with the risk of frostbite.
But in the south, the rain threatens the bright snow landscape.
– The snow will probably rain away there, says meteorologist Hilda Westberg at SMHI.
The article in brief
It may be minus 20 degrees in northwestern Götaland during Sunday evening.
A yellow warning for cold has been issued for Norrlandsfjällen and is valid throughout Monday. SMHI warns of frostbite and cooling.
Towards the middle of the week, milder weather and rain is expected instead of snow in southern Sweden.
Milder weather is expected – but Sunday will end with a real chill.
– First it will continue to be cold, especially in northwestern Götaland where the temperature can drop to minus 20 degrees this evening, says Hilda, meteorologist at SMHI.
Locally, it can be even colder, especially in Dalsland and the Gothenburg region, where weak winds make the cold bite.

Yellow warning for cold in ski resorts
In Norrlandsfjällen, it will be really cold and windy on Calfjällen on Monday, where SMHI has issued a yellow warning for a strong cooling effect with the risk of frostbite and hypothermia. This applies to an area where ski resorts such as Funäsdalen and Åre are located.
“Take shelter from the wind and pay attention to your body’s warning signals.” writes SMHI in the warning.
In Åre, the temperature on Monday is around minus eleven degrees, but with the cold wind it feels like -20.
The warning is valid from midnight on Monday night and until 11pm on Monday night.
A yellow warning for snowfall is in place over Gotland during Sunday. There, the wind is expected to subside during the night, but the snowfall continues to be heavy on the island also during Monday.
In southern Sweden, however, the snow risks raining away.

Covers await – milder air on the way
But during the week there is a change in weather when milder air moves in from the south. Already during the day on Monday, temperatures are expected to rise in southern Sweden.
Then precipitation is coming.
– Snow falls towards Tuesday and turns into rain, especially in Skåne when the temperature reaches plus degrees, says Hilda.
Towards Wednesday and Thursday, it is still uncertain where the line between rain and snow will be in the country.
– Most of Götaland and possibly eastern Svealand can get rain instead of snow then, says Hilda Westberg.
In southern Götaland, the snow is expected to rain away – which requires a warning:
– And with the risk of rain probably comes the risk of slipping, warns Hilda Westberg.
Even in the far north, the severest cold is expected to moderate slightly during the week.
