Once a year, the government decides on new salaries for Sweden’s directors-general, county governors and rectors of universities and colleges.

This year’s decision was hammered out three weeks ago. In a press release, the government wrote that the group as a whole will receive a salary increase of 3.3 percent, and that the new salaries will apply retroactively from October 1 last year.

The highest paid government officials

The highest paid of the agency heads is Petra Lundh, who heads Sweden’s largest agency: the police. She receives a salary increase of 6,100 kronor and now lands at 194,100 kronor, according to Dagens juridik.

Right after that comes Nils Öberg from the Swedish Social Insurance Agency, with 189,600 kronor per month.

Previously, Micael Bydén was third on the list of the highest-paid heads of government agencies, with 181,500 kronor a month, but he left last fall and was succeeded by Michael Claesson.

Claesson has now had his monthly salary increased from 175,000 to 183,000 kronor, according to Dagens juridik.

New ministers

Katrin Westling Palm at the Swedish Tax Agency is also among the top earners, with her 185,000 kronor a month, as is Maria Mindhammar at the Swedish Migration Agency with 182,600.

From July 1, ministers’ salaries will also increase.

Ulf Kristersson will then go from 198,000 to 204,000 kronor per month, while other cabinet ministers will receive 161,000 kronor in monthly salary, according to a press release from the government.
