News, reports and analyzes in Sweden and the rest of the world.

The use of electric scooters has increased exponentially in recent years and has become an obvious part of the traffic picture. But behind the nimble two-wheelers hides a risk that many parents miss:

If your child drives too fast, you can lose your driver’s license. This is reported by P4 West.

For an electric scooter to count as a bicycle, it must not go faster than 20 kilometers per hour. If it goes faster than that, it is classified as a motor vehicle – and then completely different rules apply.

– The most important thing is to keep track of how powerful the engine is. If you get a stronger electric scooter (than allowed, editor’s note) it starts to be a problem, you could say, says Rickard Nilsson at the police in Vänersborg.

Then you lose your driver’s license

Anyone who lets someone drive a vehicle that requires a driver’s license without the person being entitled to it can also be punished themselves. The criminal classification is called permitting illegal driving.

– If you are convicted of allowing illegal driving, the Swedish Transport Agency can question your driver’s license suitability and in some cases revoke your driver’s license, says Nilsson to P4 Väst.

The police also see a clear increase in accidents involving electric scooters.

– You drive these electric scooters without having any traffic knowledge with you. This means that you end up in accidents to an ever greater extent. Many manage, but there are also many who are seriously injured, says Rickard Nilsson.
