Mess and drunkenness – this is what Midsummer Eve was like around the country

Drunken fights on the dance floor, drunk driving and McDonald’s brawls.

The police had a lot to do during the classic party night this year.

– It’s the Midsummer drunks who are causing it, says police spokesman Leif Fransson.

Just before midnight, a Midsummer celebration on a dance floor in Malmö went completely off the rails. The police were called after a fight broke out between about ten people.

– It’s a classic bowling alley fight where a number of people have become involved and are fighting, says police spokesperson Leif Fransson.

The people participated in a traditional midsummer party in a residential area, and according to the police, the place was very crowded.

– It’s the Midsummer drunkenness that’s causing it, and old grievances need to be sorted out. Then people will get their asses kicked, simply put.

Who started the fight, and the extent of the injuries to those who were assaulted, is still unclear.

Young man stabbed in Malmö

Earlier this evening, a man in his 20s was stabbed in the Hyllie district of Malmö. It is also unclear exactly what happened there.

– He has been stabbed in the back, but what happened is very messy and unclear. How many people were involved is also unclear, says Leif Fransson.

A number of witnesses to the incident itself will be questioned “once people have sobered up,” according to the police. A report of aggravated assault has been filed.

Clear weather throughout the country

It has also been chaotic elsewhere in the country during Midsummer.

In the Stockholm region, the police have handled 830 cases, compared to between 650 and 750 in an average year. The cases often involve drunkenness and fights.

Region Mitt – with responsibility for Gävleborg, Uppsala and Västmanland counties – shares the same picture.

– It has been chaotic as usual, with alcohol and assault, says Magnus Jansson Klarin, the police’s press spokesman in the Central region.

He notes that midsummer means a significantly higher workload than a regular weekend.

– There were a lot of cases, significantly more.

Uninvited partygoers

At two house parties in the country, there was chaos when uninvited guests showed up.

A fight broke out in Mjölby after the unwanted guests pulled the plug on the music. Two people were injured and the police are investigating assault and trespassing.

At another party in Valbo in Gävle, some party-hungry guys on a quad bike arrived there, without being invited. They caused a ruckus at the party and one man was beaten. Another man, aged 18, is suspected of assault.

Woman fell through roof

In Tranås, a woman in her 20s fell through a roof and was taken to hospital by ambulance. There is no suspicion of a crime in connection with the incident.

A man in Tierp called the police and stated that he had been hit in the head with a glass bottle, and that he was bleeding. The police have filed a report of aggravated assault. No one has been arrested in the case yet.

At McDonald’s in Varberg, several people punched each other in a fight during the evening. Several of the suspects then fled the scene by car. The car was later found by the police and the people were checked. Two of them were called in for questioning to investigate what happened.

Vehicle off the road – several injured

Serious traffic accidents occurred in several parts of the country.

During the evening, a quad bike overturned on a road outside Kungsbacka. A man in his 20s who was driving the vehicle broke his leg and was bleeding from the head, according to police. He was taken to hospital by ambulance and is suspected of serious drunk driving.

At half past one, a cross-cart carrying four young people went off the road outside Vara in Västergötland. The driver was slightly injured, but tested positive for alcohol intoxication. The three others in the car were taken to hospital, one of them by ambulance helicopter.
