The frenzy at New Year’s when 2025 became 2026

New Year’s Eve, when the year 2025 became 2026, became messy in several parts of the country. In Sollentuna, three stairwells were evacuated after a garage fire, and in Solna a young man was seriously injured by a piece of fireworks in the face – the police suspect that people aimed fireworks at each other. Several fires were also reported, including in a villa outside Nyköping and a barn on Öland, as well as two suspected murder attempts – one in Kungsbacka where a man in his seventies was attacked by a relative, and one in Stockholm where a man was stabbed in a hotel. In addition, a man in Hörby was injured by fireworks in his kitchen, and the police had to euthanize a moose after a traffic accident outside Nyköping.

Lukashenka warned Putin of assassination plans

Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenka says he warned his friend Vladimir Putin of a planned assassination attempt, prompting Putin to cancel a trip to a summit in South Africa in August 2023. Lukashenka says their intelligence service received information about a planned terrorist attack against Russia’s president and therefore advised Putin not to go. Putin chose to stay at home and instead sent his foreign minister, Sergei Lavrov, to the meeting.
