Glenn Strömberg recently told GP that he would have knee surgery and a prosthesis inserted.
The operation has now been carried out in Bergamo and the former football player remains in the hospital when he speaks to Sportbladet.
– Then there will be a little training camp. Rehab is very important at first, so I’m going up to San Pellegrino where I know some people, says Strömberg.
Successful operation
Strömberg will remain in the hospital before training camp for the rest of June.
– They will check the wound and make sure there are no infections, he says.
Everything looks good so far?
– Everything looks great. Everything went perfectly. They asked if I was in pain, but the anesthesia hasn’t really worn off yet. So everything is perfect!
You’re waiting for the pain to start…?
– It’s a bit written in the stars. It’s a bit different for everyone. Some get a little more and some get a little less. I just hope I get a little less. But everything can’t be better than it is right now. The doctors told me that they were very happy with everything when I woke up. There was no hassle. The knee replacement went exactly according to plan.
Are you excited to start rehab training to get your new knee going?
– I know I’m really stressed. Because rehab training is tiring and hard. But I know how important it is and it will hopefully last a lifetime. Then these weeks will be an important part of it all so that I can feel good all the time going forward.
Problems with walking
The operation is because Strömberg had no cartilage left in his knee. An operation was planned 20 years ago, but other things got in the way. In recent years, however, an operation has come closer because Strömberg has had problems walking. He has not been able to jog for ten years.
– It’s a perfect summer now without any World Cup or European Championship that I would be working on. Then a few years ago I set my sights on it being this summer, says Strömberg, who usually acts as an expert for SVT during the major championships.
The problems from his football career are a common topic of conversation when Strömberg talks to old colleagues.
– With elite sports at the highest level, you stay healthy and fresh for many years if you don’t get injured. But it takes a toll on your body when you get older. I don’t know anyone I played with who doesn’t have serious injuries or hasn’t had surgery here and there. These aren’t injuries, but pure wear and tear. I’ve been lucky not to have to have any surgeries for any injuries. This is wear and tear that I’ve had to deal with for a number of years.
Strömberg has spoken to people who have had the “same” operation. They are satisfied. But one thing feels uncertain…
– The only thing you wonder about is the flights. I’ve flown almost 5,000 times in the last 30 years. And if it beeps every time you go through… You might have to bring some kind of certificate and ID. I don’t really know how it works and I’ll have to find out for sure, Strömberg says, laughing.
