Food shortage at Vänersborg prison – prisoners go on strike

Inmates at the Brinkeberg prison in Vänersborg are protesting – because the food is not enough.

Now prisoners in two of the four departments have gone on strike, writes Kriminalvårdsmagasinet.

– I understand the clients’ frustration, says an employee at the prison.Latest news clips from Expressen.

The strike began on Friday and is still ongoing on Monday, according to Kriminalvårdsmagasinet.

The Swedish Prison Service confirms to the newspaper that the inmates at Brinkeberg Prison have gone on strike because they are not getting enough food.

However, the institution’s correctional director, Henrik Vang, tells the newspaper that the problem could have been avoided if the inmates themselves had changed their behavior.

– In the two wards on strike, the food would have been enough if it had been distributed fairly. This has not happened and we will therefore continue to portion out lunch and dinner to each of the inmates.

According to Henrik Vang, those inmates receive sufficient portions in line with the Swedish National Food Agency’s recommendations, writes Kriminalvårdsmagasinet.

“I understand the clients’ frustration”

However, one of the staff at Brinkebergsanstalten agrees with the striking prisoners.

– Unfortunately, I have seen for myself how portioning the food is not enough. The amount of food that is distributed to the clients is, in my opinion, very little for an adult man. Several of my colleagues agree. I know colleagues who work at Högsbo and they don’t have this problem there at all, so I think it should be resolved. I understand the clients’ frustration, the employee tells Kriminalvårdsmagasinet.
