Three young people are being treated in hospital after drinking alcohol containing isopropanol on Saturday evening. The substance can cause nausea, vomiting, stomach pains as well as unconsciousness and death for those who ingest it.

The young people, who are between 13 and 15 years old, were taken to hospital by ambulance from the Stockholm suburbs of Nacka and Tyresö. Information has been received that the young people have bought so-called foul liquor.

– I don’t know how they are doing, I haven’t received an overall picture of the care yet. But there are many in hospital, says police spokesperson Mats Eriksson.

Five arrested

On Sunday morning, the police stated that they had arrested five people linked to the “vodka cab”.

It concerns four adult men and one teenage boy, under 18 years of age. They were caught shortly after and have since been arrested.

– They have sold via social media and they are connected to the same “vodka truck”, says Mats Eriksson.

The five people are suspected of several crimes: gross illegal possession of alcohol, gross illegal sale of alcohol and causing bodily harm.

– These are serious crimes.

The police: “Very young”

On Friday, the police announced that four 15-year-old girls in Vallentuna had been taken to hospital after drinking alcohol bought from a contact on Snapchat. Two of them were unconscious.

During the night of Saturday, another couple of teenagers fell ill after drinking alcohol bought from a “vodka truck” via Snapchat.

– They are very young, said Mats Eriksson at the police.

All the young people who fell ill have stated that they bought one-litre bottles of Smirnoff brand vodka from the langar. These are not sold at the Swedish Systembolaget.

Although the police have now arrested five people who are connected to a “vodka truck”, young people are still being urged to be careful, and parents to keep an eye on them.

– Alcohol itself is dangerous for young people, but it is even more dangerous if it contains isopropanol. You have to talk to your children if they have bought this kind of alcohol, because it can even be life-threatening, says Mats Eriksson.
