No.

It will be a sunny but cold weekend when cold air flows down from Russia’s Kola Peninsula.

Southern Sweden may get the first snow of the season.

– The milder air does not reach us, says meteorologist Hilda Westberg.

The article in brief

Sunny but cold weather awaits this weekend, according to SMHI.

The first snow may fall in southern Sweden.

A yellow warning is issued for snow and strong wind in the mountains.

The cold is due to a high pressure south of Greenland and cold air from Russia.

It has been an unusually mild autumn.

But now it’s getting cold.

Götaland and Svealand get temperatures between around zero and a few plus degrees both Saturday and Sunday this weekend, with slightly higher on the West Coast and Gotland. At night, it can drop to minus five, according to meteorologist Hilda Westberg at SMHI.

– Initially, we have some sun in Götaland and Svealand, she says and continues:

– On Sunday, a front will pass to the south. There is not a lot of precipitation, but there are some clouds passing by.

From the counties of Halland and Jönköping and southward, you can expect rain showers moving eastward and by evening Kalmar, Blekinge, Öland and Gotland will also be affected.

Then the first snow in southern Sweden can fall.

– There may be a small amount of snow in the highlands as well, says Hilda Westberg.

Yellow warning

To the north it is colder.

– In Norrland, it’s a little difficult in the mountains with snow flurries pushing in the westerly wind.

The wind is up to strong, and SMHI has issued a yellow warning in the mountain range for too much snow in combination with wind on Calf mountain.

– The snow villages also affect the interior. There will be lines that almost reach the coast locally, says Hilda Westberg.

A low pressure passes the northernmost parts of the country during Saturday. When it has passed, the snowfall will decrease in the far north until Sunday, but may linger in Västerbotten County and the mountain range, but otherwise it clears up a bit.

– There will be some sun. In the far north it will be cold with 15-20 degrees below zero, says Hilda Westberg.

Greenland blockade

The explanation for the cold snap is a high pressure that has built up over the Atlantic, a “Greenland blockade” for those who want it.

– The center of high pressure is south of Greenland. This means that the jet stream and low pressure go on a more southerly path. They do not reach us with the milder air.

At the same time, cold air flows down from Russia.

– It is a low pressure that passed and settled over the Kola Peninsula, which caused colder air to flow down from the north that covers the entire country.

– Next weekend it looks more uncertain. Then we’ll see what happens after that.
