The textile industry itself will have to bear the costs of the textile waste.
The Swedish Environmental Protection Agency has been tasked with proposing how producer responsibility for textiles should be designed, Climate and Environment Minister Romina Pourmokhtari (L) announces at a press conference.
Pourmokhtari says that you can compare it to the packaging industry, where you already have producer responsibility and pay for the handling of the waste.
– This is what must now be imitated for textiles. We notice that we have more and more textile waste and a lot of wear and tear in the Swedish economy and among Swedish consumers. We want to counteract that through this producer responsibility.
For consumers, it will mean no difference more than that waste management is not paid for with tax money, she says.
The Swedish Environmental Protection Agency must report on the assignment in autumn 2026.
