Several cables in the Baltic Sea have suffered interruptions.

On the night of Tuesday, there was a break in a fiber cable between Sweden and Estonia, in Estonian waters.

– We have been informed about the crimes and are in contact with cable owners and other authorities, says Anders Wallinder, head of the department for preparedness and security protection at the Swedish Post and Telecommunications Agency.

According to the authority, the cable belongs to the company Arelion, but no Swedish customers are affected. At the same time, other cable breaks have been discovered in the Gulf of Finland early on Wednesday morning.

Ship seized

Finnish authorities have seized a vessel suspected of having caused one of the cable breaks in the Baltic Sea, Yle reports.

The ship must have had its anchor chain in the water and 14 crewmen have been detained. These are citizens from Russia, Georgia, Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan, Finnish police stated during a press conference.

The incident is being investigated as suspected serious damage and suspected serious interference with postal and telecommunications traffic, according to Hufvudstadsbladet.

Last winter, 2024-2025, there were several alarms about cable breaks in the Baltic Sea.
