Bonmati hospitalized – days before the European Championship

The European Championship premiere is six days away.

Then Aitana Bonmati, 27, finds herself in hospital with a drip.

The Spanish star has been diagnosed with meningitis.

When Spain played their European Championship qualifier against Japan in Leganes tonight, winning 3–1, star Aitana Bonmati was not in the squad.

In the middle of the game, the 27-year-old instead posted a story on Instagram where she was lying down and watching the match from a room in the hospital with a visible drip in her left arm, which indicated ongoing treatment.

She did not share any more information than that.

But later in the evening, clearer information came from the Spanish camp. The midfielder has had a high fever for two days and on the advice of the medical team she was admitted to hospital on Friday, reports Marca.

Aitana underwent several medical tests before it was determined that she had meningitis. There is no timetable yet for whether the 27-year-old will be able to recover in time to play in the European Championship.

“This morning the doctor took her in for tests. At first everything went well but then it turned out that she had meningitis. Those are scary words but everything is basically under control, although we don’t know the timeframe”, the Spanish Football Federation writes in a statement.
