She has been fighting cancer for several years.
But now Birgitta Ohlsson, 50, is opening up for a political comeback.
– I feel that my fingers itch quite a bit if I’m honest, says the former EU minister in SVT’s “Carina Bergfeldt”.

Birgitta Ohlsson challenged Jan Björklund for the party leader position in the Liberals, but lost and left politics in connection with the 2018 election. She moved to the USA with her family and started working at the National Democratic Institute.
In 2021, she suffered from aggressive breast cancer and was then treated, among other things, with chemotherapy. At the beginning of 2024, she suffered from leukemia – a direct result of the chemotherapy.
“Feeling some anxiety”
For several years, Birgitta Ohlsson, who sat in the Riksdag for the Liberals for 16 years and was EU and Democracy Minister between 2010 and 2014, felt no longing to return to the corridors of power.
But now “the fingers itch”, the 50-year-old tells SVT’s “Carina Bergfeldt”.
– I also feel a certain concern. We have an election in Sweden next year. It was listed in a major American newspaper the other day as one of the most important elections in the world next year, because it pretty much determines how the balances will look in Europe, with right-wing populist parties and such. It makes me feel quite tempted sometimes, that I should get involved, says Birgitta Ohlsson.
But there won’t be any comeback in the Liberals. In the last election, Birgitta Ohlsson voted for the Center Party, she says in the TV program.
