Food became significantly more expensive in 2025.
According to Matpriskollen, prices increased by an average of 3.1 percent.
– Every cent extra on food stings hard for those who have the least money, says Ulf Mazur, CEO of Matpriskollen to Dagens Nyheter.
Almost two-thirds of the entire price increase took place in January and February, something that sparked both consumer anger and political concern.
– It was the most unusual thing during the year, that it started with such incredible force, says Ulf Mazur, CEO of Matpriskollen, to Dagens Nyheter.
The price rush contributed to the high-profile boycott against several food giants and to the government calling the industry to a crisis meeting. After that, the increase slowed down. In December, prices rose by only 0.1 percent.

Behind the slowdown are, among other things, more stable commodity prices and a stronger currency.
– A lot of input goods and the fact that the currency is going in the right direction means that the producers do not have such high demand for increases, and then things calm down, Mazur tells Dagens Nyheter.
Expected to be cheaper
Seen over the whole year, it was coffee that increased the most – close to 20 percent. This was followed by berries and minced meat. At the same time, some goods became cheaper: oil and vinegar fell the most in price, as did fruit.
But food prices are expected to continue to be a political issue, especially in the run-up to the election year.
– It hits so directly above all those who have it the hardest, so every extra cent on food stings hard for those who have the least money, says Ulf Mazur to Dagens Nyheter.
Arla has already lowered the compensation to dairy farmers, which could pave the way for lower prices for dairy products. At the same time, a stronger krona means that imported foodstuffs are expected to be cheaper, reports TV4 Nyheterna.
On 1 April, the VAT on food will also be reduced from 12 to 6 percent, a reform that should give households more money left in their wallets.
To avoid the reduction being eaten up by new price increases, the government has appointed a special food price commission to monitor the development.
