Johannes has abated, but the cold and the wind keep large parts of the country in their grip.
SMHI has updated its yellow warning for wind.
New Year’s Eve looks like it will be a cold day throughout Sweden.
The low pressures are replacing each other right now. Just in time for New Year’s Eve, the low pressure that is currently over the country subsides and among other things contributes to the very windy weather in some places.
But a new front approaching with a fairly deep low pressure. 2025 will end with freezing temperatures in large parts of the country and in some places even a blanket of snow.
– During New Year’s Eve, there is first a low pressure that moves further to the east, one might say, over southern Norrland and down over the Baltic Sea landscape there during the morning of New Year’s Eve. And then it is followed by a slight stabilization temporarily in the middle of the day, says meteorologist Anna Belking at SMHI and continues:
– But then when you look further towards the evening and the night of Thursday, it looks like a deeper low pressure is moving in and will touch a fairly large part of the country. It looks like there could be some wind and even snowfall.
It is only on the west coast and in parts of Skåne that the minus temperatures do not quite keep up and rain is expected instead of snow.
– On the west coast and down in Skåne it looks to be quite wet.
Still windy
With the low pressure, more clouds also move in and then it can be difficult to see any New Year’s fireworks.
– Possibly in the eastern parts of Götaland and in northernmost Norrland it might be a little better, some gaps in the moth cover, so you can see. But otherwise it looks like it could be difficult. But, yes, it is in the eastern parts of Götaland and in northernmost Norrland then. Like the chance of it being a bit bigger then.
SMHI has issued yellow weather warnings for strong winds until Tuesday. On Fårö on Gotland, storm surges are expected and the authority writes that there is a risk of disruptions to electricity and telecommunications networks in areas with overhead lines.
After storm Johannes, which swept across the northern part of Sweden last Saturday, roughly 13,000 households are still without electricity.
But whether the new low pressure that opens the year will mean more warnings is too early to say.
– It is something we will have to look at further here during the days. But it is probably very possible that it could become something.
