In July, The Sun reported that a former Premier League star, who was not named at the time, had been arrested at an airport in front of other passengers.

Now the newspaper reports that it is about Andy Carroll and that he will be put on trial on Tuesday.

The 36-year-old is charged with violating a no-contact order, and now faces up to five years in prison.

Arrested at the airport

The Englishman was arrested at the end of April, and the crime is said to have taken place a month earlier, but no details about the sequence of events have emerged.

The arrest took place at Stansted Airport in London in front of surprised passengers.

The striker has previously made negative headlines after a drunken brawl on holiday in Mykonos with ex-girlfriend Lou Teasdale.

Became the most expensive ever

Carroll left top European football a couple of years ago and during his career has represented clubs such as Newcastle, Liverpool and West Ham. Today he plays in the lower divisions in England.

In 2011, he became the most expensive English player in history when he left Newcastle for Liverpool.

He is also listed for nine international matches.
