At the JVM in cross-country skiing 2019, Frida Korva seriously presented herself at home in Lahti to the Finnish audience.
She won three bronze medals. Among other things in the sprint where she finished ahead of Linn Svahn and Frida Karlsson. In the same year, she also got the chance at the senior WC.
But at the senior level, she never managed to color. She disappeared from skiing and has not competed since 2022.
Criticizes the union
She says that she suffered from depression and criticizes the Finnish Skiing Association. Only one person reached out to ask how she was doing, her former trainer Esko Paavola.
– The national team said that I didn’t have to come if I felt bad and had a hard time. The treatment was somehow cold, as if I was no longer the same person. In my opinion, this is a completely wrong approach. Mental illness is still a lot of talk these days, she tells Ilta-Sanomat.
She has not officially finished her skiing career. She works as a ski coach, but when it comes to elite skiing, she says she has just started “burying his skiing career in the last year”.
“The list never ends”
She says she didn’t like competing and that there isn’t much good in professional skiing. She mentions travel and food as examples.
– When you go abroad to compete, you are constantly afraid that something will happen, for example that you will get sick. You can’t shake hands, you don’t really do anything and you don’t go anywhere. You had to sleep in the same room with some random teammate, she says and continues:
– You get some lean meat soup on the table where there is only broth. Then you just think that this really doesn’t benefit me. Every little thing was stressful, especially for a person like me who likes to be alone. The list never ends.
