ANAHEIM. William Nylander saved Thanksgiving peace for the Maple Leafs, we note in tonight’s NHL sweep.
With a late sudden death goal against Columbus, he took his team out of the bottom tier of the table – and at the same time broke Mats Sundin’s club record for the number of overtime decisions.
THE SWEDISH HERO OF THE NIGHT
Well, the American version of Thanksgiving is not celebrated in Canada, but like their rivals south of the border, the red and white teams have Thursday off – and if the Maple Leafs entered the short rest with another loss under their belt, stuck at the bottom of the Eastern standings, galloping depression would have broken out in the hometown.
But William Nylander thus ensured that the team gets some holiday peace.
First, he assisted on the 1-1 tie youngster Easton Cowan scored 16.43 into the final period. Then he decided himself, after fine preparatory work by Oliver Ekman-Larsson, when only 20 seconds remained of extra time.
With that, the Leafs get past Buffalo at the bottom of the eastern table – and thus “Lill-Nyllet” also takes over the club record in number of overtime goals from the duo Mats Sundin and Auston Matthews.
VICTORY SUITE OF THE NIGHT 1
The Colorado Avalanche is completely outstanding. They picked up their 10th straight win at home in the Ball Arena last night – by blanking poor San Jose 6-0.
Already five minutes into the second period, they had scored five goals, without directly overexerting themselves, and then they lost the tempo.
Gabriel Landeskog and Victor Olofsson answered for each assist.
NIGHT’S VICTORY SUITE 2
After a very mediocre start to the season, the Minnesota Wild got off to a good start and secured its sixth straight victory with a 4-3 overtime goal by Kirill Kaprizov against the Blackhawks in Chicago.
Jonas Brodin contributed with two assists and Marcus Johansson and Joel Eriksson Ek each with one.
VICTORY SUITE OF THE NIGHT 3
The Tampa Bay Lightning are also strikingly hot, despite injuries to Victor Hedman and Brayden Point and Ryan McDonagh, among others, and won their fifth straight at home against Calgary.
Already after ten minutes they had a 4-0 lead and in the end they won 5-1.
THE SCREAM OF THE NIGHT
Nashville had won just one of their last nine games – the first against Pittsburgh in Stockholm – so nobody gave them much of a chance in Detroit last night either. But actually: The Predators beat the Red Wings 6-3.
Filip Forsberg was noted for an assist, just like the home team’s Lucas Raymond.
OTHER RESULTS OF THE NIGHT
The New York Rangers surprised by beating Carolina 4-2 on bortais (an assist for Mika Zibanejad), Swedish defender Emil Andrae scored the first goal of the season as Philadelphia beat Florida 4-2, New Jersey beat St. Louis 3-2 with the help of an overtime goal signed by Simon Nemec, Boston secured a 3-1 triumph away to the New York Islanders, Pittsburgh broke the negative trend with a 4-2 victory against Buffalo (a play by Erik Karlsson) and Washington won with the odd goal (4-3) against Winnipeg
