Four young men are suspected of raping a woman on a Finland ferry on the night of Saturday.
– The staff on the boat have ensured that we can do a good job, says Mats Eriksson at the police.
During the day, the suspected men were released following a decision by the Finnish prosecutor.
The men were arrested by staff on the cruise ship Viking Grace between Stockholm and Finland.
When the boat was in port, the police took over the arrest and drove the suspects to a police station.
– The boat arrived in Stockholm at 07:00. The staff had already alerted us at 04.30 after security guards on the boat arrested these four. They have an arrest on the boat, says Mats Eriksson, press spokesperson for the Stockholm police region.
At 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, Swedish police announced that the suspected crime took place in Finnish waters. The suspected men have been released on the decision of the Finnish prosecutor, the police write further.
“Working on getting an identity”
The four men are all in their 20s and live in Finland, writes Swedish newspaper Yle.
The woman, who is also in her 20s and a native of Finland, was driven to a care facility.
During the day, the police held interviews with the suspects, plaintiffs and witnesses and carried out a technical investigation of the suspected crime scene on the ferry.
Viking Line: Follows protocol
Eleonora Hansi, communications manager Sweden at Viking Line, does not want to comment on the specific matter but says that the staff always do their utmost to facilitate police investigations.
There is a protocol that the staff must follow.
– First of all, you take care of the person or people who have had something happen to them, block off the cab and call the police.
There are always staff with healthcare skills, often a nurse, on board the ferries.
– That person is usually involved at an early stage, says Eleonora Hansi.
