Former police officer Tore Hedman was murdered in his own home

Tore Hedman, a retired police officer, was murdered in his own home in Borlänge.

The 75-year-old was found dead in the garden.

Now his family is wondering how the murder could have happened.

– Tore was a very calm and peaceful person, says relative Anders Hedman. The man suspected of the crime has a long history of substance abuse and crime. He was convicted of a crime for the first time at the age of 17 and has been in compulsory care for his substance abuse as an adult. Tore Hedman was found dead in his own garden in May. He had lived in the house with his wife, who died a few years ago. Somehow the perpetrator got to him there – exactly how the murder took place is not clear.

– He sent a text message to his sister on November 20th and then you could see on a surveillance camera that the perpetrator was taking Tore’s car, says relative Anders Hedman, who was first interviewed by BorlängeTidning’s Jerry Brodin.

When he hadn’t contacted his sister in the morning, as they had agreed, she became worried.

– They had daily contact, says Anders Hedman.

The sister alerted the neighbors who went to the house. When they saw the commotion inside Tore Hedman’s home, they alerted the police. A suspected perpetrator was soon arrested.

The man has a long history of substance abuse and crime. He was convicted of a crime for the first time at the age of 17 and has been in compulsory care for his substance abuse as an adult.

Now Borlänge Municipality will investigate

He has 16 criminal records between 2011 and 2024. The convictions include theft, assault, minor drug offenses and drunk driving, something that Expressen previously reported. Last year he was charged with aggravated assault on a woman, reports SVT Nyheter.

– The perpetrator was well known to both the police and social services, notes Anders Hedman.

Now he, along with the rest of the family, is demanding that the alarms on the day of the murder and their handling be investigated by the municipality.

The large Borlänge family has suffered a heavy loss. He began his career in the hardware store in Borlänge, but then decided to continue his studies and became a police officer.

He was injured early on and then worked as an investigator on the financial side, says Anders Hedman.

– He was in the police force for so long that he received a medal. A very calm and peaceful person, not exactly a police officer who had belonged to the baseball league. Both he and his wife helped people a lot, says Anders Hedman.

Erik Nises, who is the chairman of the municipal board, S, says that an investigation is underway.

– If a person is known to the authorities, then it is obvious that the family has questions. Then I think that both the police and the region also have a responsibility. But the municipality should look at which alarms came in and how they were handled, he says.

The arrested man’s lawyer Anders Ericson states that the man denies murder, but admits to suspicion of aggravated assault and aggravated manslaughter.

What does your principal think about the municipality’s handling being investigated?

– It’s nothing we want to comment on yet, says Anders Ericson.

Relative Anders Hedman remembers how he bought fishing gear from Tore Hedman in the hardware store as a child.

– I wanted to catch the old pike. For a boy who was seven or eight years old, Tore was naturally someone you looked up to.
