Catamaran capsized in Croatia – seven Swedes on board

A catamaran carrying Swedish tourists capsized in Croatia on Monday – where a storm warning has been issued following the accident.

A sudden storm capsized the boat and threw nine people, including seven Swedes, into the sea.

A nearby sailboat rescued the passengers, two of whom were taken to hospital.

Seven Swedish tourists were thrown into the sea when a catamaran capsized off the island of Kaprije in Croatia, Croatian media reports. A German and a Croatian citizen also ended up in the water.

The Croatian weather service has issued severe weather warnings following the accident. An upcoming thunderstorm could be followed by storms and hurricane-force winds on Monday, the warning states.

Two to hospital

Two of the victims were taken to hospital in the nearby tourist resort of Sibenik. Their nationality and condition have not been released.

A sudden storm in the generally unstable weather caused the boat to capsize. The Sibenik Maritime Police Station received an alarm about a maritime accident at 11:35 on Monday.

A police boat was quickly on the scene and was able to bring all nine ashore, Croatian media reports. People on a nearby sailboat also helped rescue the people who had ended up in the water.

The accident took place near the historic town of Sibenik, the oldest town on the Croatian coast. It is a popular tourist destination, as is the entire surrounding archipelago.
