Diogo Jota will be buried in Portugal tomorrow
Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva will be buried on Saturday.
The ceremony will take place in their home country of Portugal.
– We are available to share the grief, says priest Jose Manuel Macedo.
Following the shock news on Thursday morning that Diogo Jota and his brother André Silva had died in a car accident, condolences have poured in from all corners of the football world.
Jota’s coach in Liverpool, Arne Slot, expressed himself emotionally:
– What can you say? What can anyone say in a moment like this, when the shock and pain are so incredibly raw? I wish I had the words, but I know I don’t.
When Portugal faced Spain, the brothers were honored with banners and a minute’s silence. Outside Liverpool’s home stadium, Anfield, crowds of fans gathered to remember Diogo Jota, who helped lead the team to the Premier League title last season.
The model has been recalled multiple times
It is still unclear exactly what caused the brothers to veer off the road near the city of Zamora in northwestern Spain. Police are reportedly investigating whether a flat tire may have caused the accident when the car tried to overtake another vehicle.
They were both reportedly travelling in a Lamborghini Huracan. According to The Sun, it is a model that has had problems in the past. According to the newspaper, the car, which is popular with footballers, has been recalled several times due to serious safety issues.
Sources within Lamborghini, according to The Sun, say that the car has been recalled due to, among other things, incorrectly installed crash protection, deficiencies in seat belt warnings and dangerous headlight adjustments.
There is currently no information that the previously known issues contributed to the crash.
Denying rumors about party night
“We are deeply moved by the accident in Spain where Diogo and André tragically lost their lives. Our thoughts go out to their family at this difficult time,” Lamborghini writes.
The Portuguese newspaper Record has spoken to Diogo Jota’s physiotherapist Miguel Goncalves. In the interview, Goncalves denies rumors that Jota had been partying the night before.
– I’ve read some things on the internet that are regrettable, and I’ve even heard some in the media. To be clear: Diogo and André didn’t party at all, they didn’t live a so-called “happy life”, they had nothing that needed to be “fixed”. Nothing, says Goncalves.
Buried on Saturday
He tells the newspaper that he said goodbye to the brothers at half past eight in the evening. According to Goncalves, Andre wanted to go with him to keep Diogo company and so they could spend time together.
– He said they would drive at night because it was cooler, and that they would stop and rest in Burgos before continuing to the ferry in Santander, Goncalves tells the Portuguese newspaper Record.
The funeral is expected to be held on Saturday in the brothers’ hometown of Gondomar in a Catholic church. However, the actual funeral ceremony will begin on Friday with a memorial service.
– We are available to celebrate (their lives) with everyone, share the grief and Christian hope, says priest Jose Manuel Macedo to Portuguese CNN.
