Liverpool star Diogo Jota, 28, is dead.
He died in a traffic accident shortly after midnight on Thursday night.
Jota and his brother drove off the road before their car caught fire.
The Spanish news agency EFE was the first to report that the Portuguese national team player, Diogo Jota, 28 – who belongs to Liverpool FC – has died in a traffic accident.

Jota’s brother André Silva, 25, also died in the accident. André Silva played football for Portuguese club Penafiel until 2024.

The circumstances surrounding the accident are being investigated. According to information from Spanish authorities, the car’s tires exploded during an overtaking manoeuvre, causing the driver to lose control. The car, a Lamborghini, then went off the road and caught fire.
According to reports, the brothers were on their way to the ferry to Great Britain, where Liverpool’s pre-season starts on Monday.
Doctors have reportedly advised the Liverpool star against flying after a recent operation.

The Portuguese Football Federation has confirmed the death. Pedro Proenca, the federation’s president, wrote in a statement:

Diogo Jota scored 14 goals in 49 appearances for Portugal’s senior national team. He was part of the team that won the UEFA Nations League in 2019 and 2025.

Diogo Jota joined Liverpool from Wolves in 2020.

Jota scored a total of 65 goals and 26 assists in 182 competitive matches for the club. He was part of Liverpool’s Premier League title win earlier this spring.
Minute of silence at the Women’s European Football Championship
UEFA confirms that a minute’s silence will be held during all matches today and tomorrow in the Women’s European Championship in honour of Dioga Jota and André Silva. This also applies to Sweden’s European Championship opener against Denmark on Friday.
