Capital shows new interest in Europe
Jeff Bezos’ wedding in Venice is a symbol of Europe’s role as a historical backdrop to the global economy. But with the fall of the dollar and the return of Trump, the balance between the continents is slowly beginning to shift.
The world’s third richest man reportedly rented a European city this weekend to hold a wedding against a beautiful historic backdrop. According to information from the Washington Post, it cost Jeff Bezos between 20 and 30 million euros to marry Lauren Sánchez in Venice. And of course, it wasn’t literally the entire city that the Amazon founder rented. “Just” a couple of hotels and apparently “not at all the entire local fleet of water taxis” (which there were long malicious rumors that Amazon had taken over.)
For Venice, a city where, according to official statistics, there are now more beds for tourists than for residents (51,129 against 48,166…), it has undeniably soured on being used in this way. This despite the fact that 600 weddings take place in the city every year, which of course brings in money. But recently the attitude towards them has changed.
