The round of 16 was canceled – everyone had to evacuate
Acknowledged immediately after the interruption – decided in extra time
Extreme weather has caused trouble at the Club World Cup again.
In the 85th minute, Benfica – Chelsea was forced to be suspended.
The players were forced to leave the field and the crowd was evacuated.
Chelsea were leading 1-0 in their Club World Cup round of 16 tie against Benfica when the referee abandoned the match due to bad weather. It was the fifth match to be abandoned for this reason during the tournament.
“Due to adverse weather conditions in Charlotte, including the risk of lightning in the vicinity of the stadium, the Club World Cup match between SL Benfica and Chelsea FC has been temporarily suspended. It will resume as soon as it is safe to do so,” FIFA wrote on its website.
– There were four minutes left, why didn’t they just finish the game? In the four minutes it took to evacuate, the game could have been finished. For me, it’s hard to understand, says former Chelsea player John Obi Mikel in DAZN.
Samuel Dahl, Benfica’s Swedish left-back, started the match and was on the pitch when it was abandoned.
New drama after the interruption
After just over two hours, the match resumed – with only sporadic people in the stands.
Since then it became huge drama right away.
With just three minutes left in the match, Benfica was awarded a VAR-awarded penalty after a handball.
Star Angel Di Maria took the penalty, scoring it safely and taking the match to extra time.
In extra time, Benfica was sent off and then Chelsea were able to take over and take the lead again. The match ended 4–1 to Chelsea, who are thus qualified for the quarter-finals.
