Tragedy: Three dead after falling from stands

Three spectators have died after falling from the stands during a football match between MC Alger and NC Magra.

Another 70 people are reported to have been injured.

The accident occurred after a railing broke.

MC Alger secured victory in the Algerian top division for the second year in a row on Saturday evening – after drawing with NC Magra.

But the fan celebration ended in tragedy. A dozen people fell from the upper stands. According to local media, the spectators fell after a fence in the upper stands broke, Reuters reports.

Three people have died, while over 70 people are being treated in hospital for their injuries, something that Algeria’s Ministry of Health has confirmed in a statement on Facebook.

The country’s President Abdelmadjid Tebboune has expressed his condolences on his social media.

“After the painful tragedy that befell the supporters of Mouloudia d’Alger today at the 5 Juli stadium, I can only express my condolences to the soul of the deceased supporter,” he writes in a post on X.

“Great sorrow and heavy hearts”

The injured were rushed to hospital and the award ceremony has been postponed. According to local media, players and staff from MC Alger visited the hospital to donate blood.

The club has also issued a statement on Instagram.

“It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that we received the news of our supporter Younes Amguzzi, who passed away after falling from the upper stands,” they write.

MC Alger has not commented on the other deaths.
