New giant throw by Daniel Ståhl in Finland
Daniel Ståhl, 32, continues to show emerging form.
The Swede set a new season best with a throw of 70.19 meters, which was “only” enough for third place.
– It was a damn fun evening, says Sthål according to Iltalehti.
In the shadow of Anderas Almgren and Armand Duplantis, Daniel Ståhl also had a fine competition at Stockholm Stadium on Sunday.
In the final round, the Swedish Olympic gold medalist threw 69.53 meters, which was his best throw of the season at the time.
Just two days later, in the Paavo Nurmi Games, Ståhl improved his season best to 70.19, which he achieved in the fourth round. After that, a satisfied Ståhl offered a little dance in front of a sunny Turku.
It was the first time since the World Championships in Budapest in 2023 that he threw over 70 meters.
Thriving on the “second home field”
In a truly highly qualified competition, Ståhl ultimately finished in third place behind Matt Denny, 70.52, and Kristjan Ceh, who won the competition with a throw that reached 70 meters and 61 centimeters – just one centimeter from Ståhl’s stadium record.
– It was absolutely crazy. Three men over 70 meters, says Ceh.
According to Athletics News, it was the second time ever that three throwers reached over 70 meters. The only time it has happened before was at the windy competition in Ramona where Mykolas Alekna set the world record in April with a throw of 75.56 meters.
– Of course I’m not happy with the placement, but this was a historic competition. It’s probably never happened before in Finland that three different men have thrown over 70 meters in the same competition, says Ståhl.
Grandma stayed home
The competition in Turku has a special place in Daniel Ståhl’s heart. His Swedish mother Taina is from the city and his grandmother Leila lives there.
– It was a damn fun evening. Unfortunately, grandma couldn’t come and watch, she was a little tired and it was a little chilly.
The Swedish star also has a habit of throwing long distances in Turku. He has thrown over 70 meters several times and has won the competition several times.
