Duplantis’ first record in Sweden
Mondo Duplantis, 25, reached a new milestone.
Now he has broken the world record in pole vaulting on Swedish soil.
– It was perhaps the worst feeling I’ve ever had before a world record jump, says Duplantis.
Ahead of Sunday’s Diamond League competition, Duplantis said there was one thing he was missing in his career. He hadn’t broken any world records back home in Sweden.
But now he is the first Swedish athlete to do it since high jumper Patrik Sjöberg jumped 2.42 meters at the Stockholm Stadium in 1987.
Passed 6.28 meters
Duplantis won the Bauhaus Gala pole vault competition in his usual superior style and then raised the bar to a world record height of 6.28 meters.
With some trepidation on the bar, Duplantis managed to break the world record on his first attempt. He then celebrated by tearing off his shirt and running to his fiancée Desiré Inglander, who gave him a world record kiss.
“I did it”
Duplantis has now set world records twelve times in his career.
– It’s hard to rank, but this is very high on the list. It’s a sick feeling. It’s hard to compare to anything else actually. There are so many emotions right now. I’m just so proud of myself and happy that I could do it in front of the Swedish people and everyone who was here today. I’m very grateful and overwhelmed, he says.
The feeling before the super jump was not perfect.
– I didn’t feel so good throughout the competition.
– It was perhaps the worst feeling I’ve ever had before a world record jump. But I knew I just needed a good jump, a good run and I did it.
