Swedish success – in shared leadership
OAKMONT. Ludvig Åberg missed the cut in the US Open.
But on the LPGA Tour, Madelene Sagström is having success and leading ahead of Sunday’s decider.
– I feel like I have what it takes to win, she says in Viaplay.
Madelene Sagström’s season has been up and down to say the least.
First she missed the qualifying cut in two of her first three competitions, then she won the match play competition in Las Vegas and took the second title of her career on the US Tour.
But since then things have been slow again and she has missed the “cut” in three of her last four competitions.
So… what’s happening this week?
Well, she’s fighting for victory in the Meijer LPGA Classic in Belmont, Michigan.
”Have it in me”
The 32-year-old from Enköping finished Saturday’s round with a 67 (-5) after two eagles, including one on a par-four.
She now shares the lead with five other players at -11 overall.
– My game feels good. I said it already yesterday (read: Friday) that it feels like I can win this week. But it’s golf and the job has to be done. You have to play well, but I feel like I have it in me, she says afterwards.
“Why don’t you call?”
Sagström is coached by Hans Larsson, who was with Ludvig Åberg at the US Open this week.
Normally, Sagström and Larsson keep in touch by phone, but recently there have been fewer calls.
– He said to me: “Why don’t you ever call anymore?” I just said: “Because I already know what to do,” says Sagström, laughing.
Three titles already
Swedish women’s golf is hot right now and this season we have already had three blue and yellow wins on the LPGA tour.
Most recently when Maja Stark won the US Open. Before that, when rookie Ingrid Lindblad won the JM Eagle LA Championship and before that, when Madelene Sagström won in Las Vegas.
– It was definitely the highlight of this season, says Sagström.
