Saved England from a fiasco
Harry Kane scored his 72nd international goal for England.
The 31-year-old saved his team from a major fiasco against Andorra in the World Cup qualifiers.
– Not many will remember this match, says Kane.
England won Saturday night’s World Cup qualifying match (played in Barcelona) 1–0.
Andorra should be just a mouthful for the star-studded English team but “The Three Lions” had difficulty managing their scoring chances.
Harry Kane scored the only goal of the match five minutes into the second half, when he lunged forward and blocked a pass from Noni Madueke into an open goal.
The goal was Kane’s 450th in his senior career, counting all leagues, teams and tournaments.
Critical to the effort
After the match, both Kane and captain Thomas Tuchel were disappointed with the performance when speaking to ITV.
– There was a lack of intensity, quality and energy, says Tuchel.
Kane believes the match will be quickly forgotten.
– We can definitely play better. It wasn’t our best performance, says Kane and continues:
– We will have to analyze this in retrospect. We had good periods in the match but couldn’t attack and keep the pressure. We will take the points and move on.
Full pot
England has started the World Cup qualifiers well with nine points from three matches and a 6–0 goal difference.
The biggest competitor in the group, Serbia, has not yet started playing any matches.
The group winner goes directly to the 2026 World Cup and the runner-up gets to play a playoff.
