On Sunday, twelve people began sailing from Sicily towards Gaza aboard the ship Madleen, in a journey organized by the Freedom Flotilla Coalition, a coalition of groups challenging Israel’s blockade of humanitarian aid to Gaza.

One of the people on board is the world-famous Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg. Another is the French EU parliamentarian Rima Hassan.

They are carrying, among other things, breast milk substitute, diapers, medical supplies, water desalination and food in the form of rice and flour.

The food can be seized

But Madleen will not be allowed to approach the Gaza Strip – or add to it. The Jerusalem Post writes, citing a defense source.

The Israeli military, IDF, initially intended to let the ship dock as soon as it was determined that it did not pose a threat, but then changed its mind.

At the same time, Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz is expected to make further decisions regarding the ship on Thursday. And according to Al Jazeera, which refers to the news site Walla, there is no decision yet on how to deal with the Madleen, but the Israeli navy is said to be prepared to seize the ship.

Madleen is expected to arrive in Gaza within the next week.
